Effects of Cognitive Health Lifestyle Improvement Program for Cognitive Function, Depression, and Health behavior in Community-dwelling Elderly

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cognitive health lifestyle improvement program on cognitive function, depression, and health behavior of the elderly in rural senior center.

Methods: The 10 participants who were above 70 years olds(averaging 80.0 years of age) without dementia received 20weeks of the cognitive health lifestyle improvement program. The MMSE-DS, SMCQ, S-GDS, and K-HELP was conducted in the pretest and posttest. The collected data was analyzed using Wilcoxon Matched - Signed - Ranks Test by SPSS/WIN program.

Result: MMSE-DS scores(Z=0.845, p=0.398) and SMCQ scores(Z=-1.527, p=0.127) improved after 16-week cognitive health lifestyle improvement program. Depression(S-GDS scores) significantly increased(Z=0.933, p=0.351) after 16-week intervention. There was a significant improvement in health behavior(K-HElP scores) at week 16 compared to week 1(=2.803, p=0.005).

Conclusion: These findings indicate that an 16-week cognitive health lifestyle improvement program could be an effective intervention program to improve cognitive function and health behavior of elders in rural senior center.
